NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) — A fifth suspect has been ordered to stand trial in an ambush shooting that killed a 14-year-old and wounded several other teenagers outside a Philadelphia high school after a football scrimmage in 2022. A judge ruled Monday that there was enough evidence to hold 17-year-old Dayron Burney-Thorn for trial on murder, aggravated assault and other charges in the September 2022 shooting near Roxborough High School and on charges in a separate slaying the day before. He and four co-defendants, including three other teens, are to stand trial together. Authorities said five people jumped from a parked SUV and opened fire on teens who were walking away from an athletic field at Roxborough High. Nicholas Elizalde, 14, of suburban Havertown, was killed, and three other teens were taken to a hospital with wounds; another was treated at the scene.

YOAKUM, Texas — A small plane crashed Tuesday while approaching a Texas airport, killing four members of a Tennessee church and leaving the lead pastor injured, authorities and the church said. The single-engine Piper PA-46 crashed in an open field south of an airport in Yoakum, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Harvest Church, located in the Memphis suburb of Germantown, said lead pastor Kennon Vaughan was stable at a Texas hospital. The church identified the four people killed as Bill Garner, the church’s executive vice president; Steve Tucker, a church elder; and Tyler Patterson and Tyler Springer. “All were beloved members of Harvest Church and their loss currently leaves us without the proper words to articulate our grief,” the church said on its website.

Dangerous drugs and violent crime are plaguing the state of Pennsylvania. At a roundtable discussion with community members in Germantown, another Philadelphia neighborhood, I heard numerous stories of individuals losing loved ones to violent crime. Fetterman has made clear his support for Oregon’s measure 110, which decriminalized drugs like heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine. Measure 110 has also been linked to a massive increase in violent crime. The crisis ravaging vulnerable communities like Kensington results from ineffective drug policies pushed by elected officials who care more about caring than fixing.
